Kurdish women condemn Liberty attack and demand their return to Camp Ashraf

NCRI – The Iranian residents of Camp Liberty should be returned to the safety of Camp Ashraf after the deadly February 9 mortar attack which was committed by the Iranian regime and Iraqi government, a Kurdish women’s group in Iraq has announced.

The Association of Kurdistan Free Women said in a statement that UNHCR should recognize the Camp Liberty residents as refugees.

It read: “Once again the Iranian refugees in Camp Liberty suffered bloodshed at dawn on Saturday 9 February 2013.

“There is no doubt that this is a crime against humanity committed by the Iranian regime and Iraqi government. The US and UN are also responsible for this bloodshed.”

The camp which is only half a kilometre square was struck with 40 rockets, but another 60 unused rockets were later found, the group based in Erbil, Iraq, said.

It added: “The process of eliminating the Iranian refugees started when the protection of camp Ashraf was handed over to Iraqi government by the US forces, since the Iranian regime and the Iraqi government had signed an agreement on this issue.

“The US had the responsibility of protecting these refugees since 2003 when they handed over their weapons to the US army.

“The Association of Kurdistan Free Women condemns the attack on residents of camp Liberty and calls on the UN and US government to consider the protection and safety of these refugees and return them back to their home at Camp Ashraf, where they lived for 27 years, and declare it a refugee camp.

“We also call on the UNHCR to officially recognize the residents as refugees.”
