Iraqi religious leader: Return Liberty residents to Ashraf

NCRI – A prominent Iraqi religious leader has made an urgent plea to the United Nations and international human rights groups to put pressure on the Government of Nouri Al-Maliki to return vulnerable Camp Liberty residents to the safety of Ashraf.

Dr. Rafe Al-Refaei also branded the Government of Nouri Al-Maliki ‘an employee of Iran’, and accused the regime of carrying out the deadly February 9 attack on Liberty that left eight dead and more than 100 injured.

Sheikh Al-Refaei – the Secretary General of Iraq’s Supreme Fatwa Secretariat – said of Liberty residents: “They are our guests and religious and human values oblige us to cherish them and not to insult them.

“This is while the present government has lost all standards and values of humanity and religion and has turned into an employee for the Iranian officials in the cities of Qom and Tehran and acts on their orders.”

He added in the interview with the Al-Hadas news center in Washington DC: “We have demanded on may occasions the return of PMOI to their original place which is Camp Ashraf, because Camp Liberty is a target and does not have any security.

“There is also nothing in the camp to protect them because this camp consists of a complex of worn-out trailers. Whereas in Ashraf there are buildings that can protect the residents from continuous attacks. Therefore if the Iraqi government had a little Arabic enthusiasm and human values, it would protect the residents and immediately return them to Camp Ashraf.

“The PMOI members are Muslims and they have been cruelly treated. They are in our country’s trust and are under the protection of God, his prophet and Iraqi believers, so they must be valued.”

Refusing to allow essential medical supplies into the camp was a crime and showed al-Maliki’s government has no respect for human life, Sheikh Al-Refaii said.

He continued: “The rockets that hit Camp Liberty came from Iran. 40 of them were launched and 60 remained. This attack resulted in the death of 8 and injury of more than a 100. Therefore we announce our solidarity with honorable people and human rights activists all over the world to preserve the lives of these innocent residents who came to Iraq and are under the protection of God and his prophet.”

Sheikh Dr. Rafe Taha Al-Refaei, Iraqi Sunni religious leader and Secretary General of the Supreme Fatwa Secretariat in Iraq is also a university professor in religious studies.

Al-Refaei observes over Islamic studies in universities of different countries. He also presided over many delegations participated in conferences regarding the religion of Islam. Sheikh Rafe Al-Refaei has many publications in the study of Islam, Quran and poetry. Collections of his fatwas have been published as a book.
