Iraqi MPs demand monitoring of Camp Ashraf by the UN Secretary General

“Iraqi parliamentarians and political personalities, view the PMOI’s presence in Iraq as legal and legitimate within the bounds of international conventions”

NCRI- Twelve members of the Council of Representatives of Iraq (Iraqi Parliament) from the three parliamentary factions of National Accord Front, Iraqi National List, and the National Dialogue Front, sent an urgent message to the United Nations Secretary General described the presence of Iranian opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), in Iraq as legal and legitimate within the framework of international conventions.

They demanded international monitoring of the situation and personal intervention of the UN Secretary General.

The Iraqi MPs underscored the fact that Camp Ashraf’s residents are protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention and also referred to the measures by Iraqi forces preventing the entry of doctors to Ashraf.

The message addressed to Ban Ki-Moon reads in part: We, a group of Iraqi parliamentarians and political personalities, view the PMOI’s presence in Iraq as legal and legitimate within the bounds of international conventions, which must be respected on the basis of the Iraqi government’s obligations and in light of the dominant spirit of the political reform bill which highlights the necessity of the comprehensive participation of forces for deciding on matters of strategic importance.

They added: “When it comes to treatment of Ashraf residents, the solution lies in the immediate lifting of all restrictions against them as well as respect for their legal rights as refugees protected by the Fourth Geneva Convention and an independent judiciary without foreign involvement. This requires international monitoring and intervention by Your Excellency.”
