Iraqi lawyers underscore rights of Ashraf residents

NCRI – An Iraqi human rights association, comprised of more than 12,000 lawyers and legal experts in the country, has released a statement voicing support for the rights of Camp Ashraf, where 3,400 members of the main Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) reside.

It said the legal status of the residents as protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention has been recognized and any attempts to deprive them of their fundamental rights would violate the convention and other international laws.

“Our association calls on the Iraqi Minister of Health, the UN envoy to Iraq and the US embassy in Baghdad to intervene and end rights violations against the residents of Camp Ashraf,” the statement read, referring to Iraqi government restrictions on the residents’ access to medical care, among other flagrant human rights violations.

“Ashraf residents are also subject to the International Humanitarian Law (IHL),” the statement stressed.
