Kurdish organizations have united to demand an end to the ‘inhumane’ medical blockade of Camp Liberty in Iraq.

In Iraqi Kurdistan, 35 political, trade union and civil organizations issued a call to allow the free movement of goods to the camp that is home to members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MK) , the Kurdish website Media reported.

The website of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan issued an appeal on January 14 signed by the Republican Party of Kurdistan, the Kurdistan Razgari Party, the Union of Kurdish artists, the Writers’ Association Kurds, the Higher Council for civil society in Kurdistan and the National Movement Caledonian.

It read: “According to reliable reports, the Iranian refugees in Iraq, housed since 2012 in Camp Liberty near Baghdad, continue to live in unacceptable conditions. They are housed in metal temporary housing units without being connected to the city power grid.

“Its inhabitants are forbidden from leaving the camp and 22 people have lost their lives due to lack of proper medical care. Over the past six years, some 116 refugees were killed, 1380 injured and seven abducted.”

Kurdish organizations urged the United Nations to recognize the Camp Liberty as a ‘refugee camp under UN protection’, and also demanded an international commission of inquiry into the crimes and massacres committed against the residents and the squandering of their property in Camp Ashraf.
