Iraqi jurists demand UN to urgently intervene to prevent relocation of Camp Ashraf residents

Camp AshrafNCRI – The Association of Independent Iraqi Jurists, comprised of 12,000 jurists and lawyers, wrote a letter to the UN Secretary General envoy in Iraq, demanding urgent intervention to prevent the forcible relocation of Ashraf residents and avert a humanitarian catastrophe.

In a letter to Ad Melkert, the Iraqi jurists wrote: It appears that the Iraqi government has no regard for international conventions and laws, and does not in any way respect humanitarian laws and human rights regulations. It does not even try to save face in front of other countries.

The Association of Independent Iraqi Jurists added: “Among the unfortunate characteristics of the current Iraqi administration is the fact that it understands nothing about the law and its effects, and moreover gives in to the orders of the Iranian regime. Both the United States and international organizations are cognizant of this fact and [lack of regard for the law] is a common trait of both regimes in Iraq and Iran. Recent statements by the Prime Minister of Iraq with regards to the residents of Ashraf is an insult to international norms and regulations. The official spokesperson for the al-Maliki government, a government which is nearing the end of its term, has demanded the forcible relocation of Ashraf residents to the prison of Nuqrat al-Salman, setting the stage for the occurrence of another humanitarian catastrophe. This is a blatant war crime and requires the UN to order the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to enact legal measures on the basis of the ICC statute in this regard.”

The letter also said: In order to prevent a massacre in Camp Ashraf, we call on Your Excellency to adopt an appropriate measure in accordance with international law. We at the Association of Independent Iraqi Jurists, which is comprised of 12,000 jurists and lawyers, ask for your help to prevent and avert the occurrence of a humanitarian catastrophe.
