Iraqi govt denies launching attack on Camp Ashraf

AKnews  – The outgoing Iraqi government denied on Saturday its intention to attack Ashraf Camp saying there were genuine efforts to get The people's Mujahedin Of Iran (PMOI), or the Mujahedine Khalq, out of the Iraqi territories in a diplomatic non-violent way.

The next government is responsible for "getting PMOI out of the Iraqi territories completely", an official source in the Iraqi government said.

"The organization has contributed in deteriorating the security and political situation in Iraq and has cooperated with the former regime to strike the Iraqi people." the source, who preferred anonymity, said, before adding that "The current Iraqi government cannot attack Camp Ashraf, but the next government will convince the international community to take the terrorist organization out of Iraq."

MPOI claimed on Saturday that the Iraqi government was planning to attack the camp, where thousands of MPOI members and supporters live in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad, in the coming days.

Diyala Operations Command denied today PMOI claims and described the allegations as "attempts to attract attention".

The officer of Public Relations and Information in Diyala, Colonel Abdul Salam Ahmed announced Saturday that the Iraqi security forces are not intending to carry out any attack or escalation or provocation on The New Iraq camp (formerly Camp Ashraf) stressing that "the land occupied by the organization is Iraqi territory and the Organization have been listed internationally as a terrorist organization. "

"The Iraqi security forces are stationed near the area…which will be returned under the complete sovereignty of Iraq after the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the cities of the province according to the joint security agreement." Ahmed said.

The spokesman of Camp Ashraf Mouhammed Iqba, said earlier to AKnews that there was a conspiracy against the people of the camp. "We received information from inside Iran about some procedures to be taken to prepare ground for disturbances and provocations to launch another attack on Ashraf camp"

He claimed that they had information that a number of journalists and reporters, helped by the intelligence services, will be sent to the camp to aggravate the situation against the inhabitants of Ashraf in preparation to launch attacks and other genocidal acts against them,"

The head of the Unified Journalists Association in Diyala province, 57 km northeast of Baghdad, Omar al-Dulaimi did not have knowledge about sending any journalists and reporters to the camp.

"The Association or the journalists have not received any invitation to go to the area… and if there were any invitation… we would have known about it." Dulaimi added.

Dozens of Iranian families have been protesting for more than three months in front of the camp's gate in an attempt to meet their sons – the members of PMOI – but the organization prevents them from entering the camp on the pretext that they are Iranian security elements.

The residents of Ashraf camp – about 3,400 people – had warned two days ago that the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the camp and handing it over to the Iraqi government would cause a humanitarian disaster.
