Camp Ashraf is home to 3,400 members of the main Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
Qahtan al-Saeedi told al-Hurra, “The Iraqi government has certain obligations with respect to its relations with the European Union and the international community when it comes to the residents of Camp Ashraf.”
“At present, the prevalent issue is the siege laid on the camp [by the Iraqi government]. The EU has condemned the Iraqi government on this issue.”
Linking the observance of the residents’ rights to compliance with international laws, Qahtan added, “How can we demand not being subject to UN Charter Chapter Seven while we violate international laws for the satisfaction of this or that country,” referring to the Iranian regime’s pressures on Baghdad to impose stricter pressures on Camp Ashraf residents.
“In the absence of a working parliament, the Nouri al-Maliki government is moving towards a direction that I think will have adverse consequences,” Qahtan added.
