Iraqi associations condemn deadly attack against Iranian dissidents camp

A number of Iraqi associations and organizations have condemned the December 26 deadly rocket attack against Camp Liberty, where members of the Iranian opposition, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) reside in Iraq and demanded UN and US to protect the residents.

The condemnations by Iraqi associations follows a joint letter by Forty-five Iraqi lawmakers to the United Nations Secretary General that described the attack on PMOI members in Iraq as crime against humanity.

The lawmakers said: “The Iraqi government has proven that it has neither the will nor the ability to protect these refugees.”

Below is excerpts of statements by Iraqi associations:

Organization for Cooperation for Human Rights in Iraq: “We condemn the criminal rocket attack at Camp Liberty and strongly urge UN and the US to act according their legal responsibilities and commitments made to the residents of Camp Liberty to provide their safety and security.”

Iraq Women’s Democratic Association: “We do not accept any violation against our guests in Iraq. The UN and US government must provide security for the residents to prevent further such attacks. It’s time for action and not words.”
Intellectual Women’s Association of Iraq: “The attack against Camp Liberty follows Maliki’s visit to Iran, clearly is Nouri al-Maliki’s gift to the Iranian regime to be supported for his third round of becoming Prime Minister. The government of Maliki was behind this attack because entering rockets in a military region and near Baghdad’s International Airport is impossible without the full cooperation of the security forces and in coordination with Iraq’s Prime Minister. We reiterate that the UN and especially US are responsible over the security of Camp Liberty residents and must guarantee their safety. They must urgently step into action to provide them with security.
Diyalah Youth Association: “Killing 112 member of the PMOI, injuring some 1000 and abducting 6 during continuous attacks is among the measures of Maliki against the Iranian opposition in Iraq.”

“This is while, they are protected persons under the fourth Geneva Convention and the UN and US must interfere to provide them with security. This is their legal responsibility.”
