NCRI – The Iraqi government must secure the release of seven hostages taken captive during the Camp Ashraf massacre, and end the blockade of food and medicine at Camp Liberty, 65 leading Iraqi Kurd politicians have demanded.

They also called on the Baghdad government to provide protection for Liberty residents, including allowing United Nations troops to patrol the camp.

A statement by the Kurdish politicians said: “It is common knowledge that the residents of Camp Ashraf have been targeted by seven military and bloody attacks by Iraqi forces since 2009 resulting in 136 residents killed and over 1700 battered and injured.

“In the massacre of the residents on September 1, 2013, in Camp Ashraf, 52 were killed and seven, six of whom women, were abducted by the Iraqi forces.

“Currently, all the Ashraf residents are stationed in Camp Liberty and are considered ‘protected persons’ by the Fourth Geneva Convention. They are recognized as refugees and asylum-seekers by the UNHCR and thus according to the international law enjoy international protection.

“Since 2012 that Ashraf residents were forcibly transferred to Camp Liberty they have been attacked three times with missiles and are presently living in very harsh conditions.”

The lawmakers made three key demands: firstly urging the Iraqi government to free the Ashraf hostages and for an international committee to conduct transparent and independent probe into massacres of Iranian dissidents in Iraq.

Secondly, they demanded that Iraq end its inhumane food and medicines blockade of Camp Liberty, provide T-walls and other protection for the residents and connect the camp to the national electrical grid.

And thirdly to allow a team of UN peacekeepers into the camp to provide security and protection to the residents being held there.
