The medical siege on Camp Liberty must be brought to an end to prevent any more deaths and illnesses among the Iranian residents, a conference in UN Geneva Headquarters has been told.

The United Nations must also declare Camp Liberty as a refugee camp and place it under the supervision of the UN High Commission for Refugees.

The event on February 20 entitled ‘Right to access to medical care’ heard 23 Iranian dissidents had now died as a result of being deprived of medical care, and other are critically ill.

Speakers also called on European governments to take immediate action to provide security for the Iranian dissidents in the camp, and halt the policy of appeasement of Iraq on the part of western governments.

The conference was organized by the France Libertes-Foundation of Danielle Mitterrand, the Nonviolent Radical Party, the Transnational and Transparty, the Women’s Human Rights International Association-WHRIA, and International Educational Development.

Speakers included Eric Voruz, Swiss MP and member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Swiss MP Jean-Charles Rielle, Alfred de Zayas, UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order, former MEP Paulo Casaca, Christiane Perregaux, Honorary Professor at the University of Geneva, and Pierre Galand, Président de la Fédération Humaniste Européenne.

Camp Liberty in Iraq houses Iranian dissident including member of the Iranian opposition the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) who have been living in Iraq for decades.
