Iraq-Iran: Formation of an Arab-Islamic committee to defend Camp Ashraf

On September 5, 2009, in a meeting near Paris attended by Arab and Islamic delegations comprised of lawmakers, legal, political and social personalities, and human rights activists from various Muslim countries, including Algeria, Jordan, Palestine and Egypt, the Arab-Islamic Committee in Defense of Ashraf was launched.NCRI – The National Council of Resistance of Iran announced that an Arab-Islamic committee is formed to defend Camp Ashraf, home to an Iranian opposition group, located near Iran-Iraq border, AFP reported from Paris on Saturday.

The statement by the committee said that defending Ashraf is not only a humanitarian responsibility towards our innocent brothers and sisters but also serves Iraq’s sovereignty and protects it from Iran’s meddling, the report added.

“The committee which its formation was announced after a meeting in Auver-sur-oise (suburb of Paris), includes Sheikh Taysir Al-Tamimi, Chief Justice of the Palestinian authority and Jordanian members of parliament and Islamic figures in France.

The committee calls for the release of 36 Camp Ashraf residents who have been taken hostage by Iraqi forces and calls on American forces to take over the protection of Camp Ashraf.
