Iraq: 3,100 tribal leaders call for protection of Iranians in Camp Liberty

NCRI – In a joint statement, over 3,100 Iraqi tribal leaders and sheikhs from across Iraq have called for protection of Iranian opposition members in Camp Liberty located near Baghdad Airport. Also they called for an end to medical blockade imposed on the Iranian political refugees by the Iraqi government of Nouri Al-Maliki.

The Iraqi sheikhs condemned the Iranian regime meddling in their country and called for the clerical regime’s expulsion from Iraq.

The signatories who include tribal leaders from across Iraq declared that “the members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in Iraq are considered protected persons based the Fourth Geneva Convention and therefore they are entitled to international protection and the US government and the UN are responsible for their protection.”

“We, the signatories, of this statement consider the PMOI (MEK) members currently residing in camp Liberty as our Muslim brothers and sisters.

“We have been living almost three decades with them in peace and harmony. Therefore we condemn the attacks on Camp Ashraf and the rocket attacks on Camp Liberty and denounce US and the UN inaction towards the violations of the Camp Liberty residents,” the statement said.

The Iraqi sheikhs explicitly demanded the United Nations to station 24/7 UN monitors and a team of Blue Helmets in Camp Liberty.
