NCRI – Reports of the use of violence against civilians in Camp Ashraf in Iraq are a cause for concern, Iceland’s Foreign Minister said in a statement on Monday.
The statement added, in unison with international organizations and other governments, including the European Union and Norway, Foreign Minister Ossur Skarphedinsson urges “Iraqi authorities to work towards a peaceful resolution and allow the United Nations to resolve the matter.”
It also said that, “The Minister expresses concern about reports that the Iraqi government has hindered humanitarian assistance to civilians who have been wounded in clashes over the last few days.”
“The government of Iceland invites the Iraqi government to fully respect international humanitarian law and ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches those who need it.”
The statement said Camp Ashraf was founded in 1986 to provide a residence for Iranian dissidents. 3,500 live in the camp, and according to reports, the Iraqi Army attacked it late last week to close it down, a move that was opposed by the residents.
