General Gustav Hägglund, former Finnish Defense Chief: Best solution now is to permanently station international observers at Camp Ashraf

NCRI – Economic sanctions against the Iraqi government are suitable but they should be accompanied by immediate stationing of the United Nations’ team at Camp Ashraf.

The Nordic countries, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland must add this initiative to UNAMI’s mission.

Camp Ashraf’s suppression has not been hidden from anybody’s eyes. Shutting down Ashraf has been on the Iraqi government’s agenda for the last two years. Iraqis promised to protect Camp Ashraf. This attack reminded me of Sabra and Shatila in Lebanon where I served there for two years as the UN team’s commander.

Military-men’s duty is to protect the citizens, not to massacre them. Nothing is more criminal than this: Killing of defenseless people. All my colleagues in the Nordic countries agree with me.

The refugees cannot be returned to Iran. Re-settling them in Europe and America is a lengthy solution. The best solution now is permanent stationing of international observers at Camp Ashraf. With their presence, they can guarantee that no other attacks will take place.

The UN High Commissionaire of Human Rights should send her observers to Camp Ashraf.

Media’s, governments’ and public opinion’s attention should be drawn to the unacceptable behavior of the Iraqi government vis-à-vis Camp Ashraf and the refugees on its soil. The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran(PMOI/MEK) should be removed from the list so that the Iraqi government wouldn’t have an excuse for massacre.
