NCRI – In a message to the residents of Camp Ashraf on the first anniversary of a deadly attack against the camp, the European Parliament’s Vice President said, “You are an example for all democrats around the world.”
Dr. Alejo Vidal-Quadras sent the message a year after Iraqi forces attacked Camp Ashraf, near Baghdad, at the behest of the Iranian regime. The camp is home to over 3,400 members of the main opposition, People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). As a result of the July 28 and 29, 2009 attacks, 11 defenseless residents were murdered and more than 400 were injured.
In his message to the residents, Dr. Quadras added that along with many of his colleagues at the European Parliament and more than 3,000 parliamentarians from across Europe, he “will continue our efforts to protect you so that one day we can all celebrate freedom and democracy in Iran.”
Below are excerpts of Dr. Quardras’s message:
“This is a message to my good friends in Camp Ashraf; friends whom I will always cherish in my memories and I will always be concerned about their fate. I say this in unison with many of my colleagues at the European Parliament and more than 3,000 parliamentarians across Europe.
“Rest assured, my good friends in Ashraf, that we will do our utmost to ensure your safety and the protection of your rights. We have sent numerous letters and requests to the Iraqi government, American officials at the State Department and Pentagon, as well as to the European Council and national governments in Europe that they must be alert about Ashraf. The events that you suffered from last year were an example of a serious crime against humanity.
“We will never forget how bravely you waged a peaceful resistance in the face of these attacks. You are an example for all democrats around the world. We will continue our efforts to protect you so that one day we can all celebrate freedom and democracy in Iran.”
