Diyala Governor urges humane treatment of Ashraf residents under intl law

NCRI – The Governor of Iraq’s Diyala province has strongly denied claims attributed to him by the Iranian regime’s agents against the residents of Camp Ashraf, stressing that the residents must be treated in accordance with international law.

Camp Ashraf is home to about 3,400 members of the main opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

According to a press release posted on the province’s official site, Dr. Abdol-Nasser al-Mahdawi, the Governor of Diyala, where Camp Ashraf is located, said, “Allegations against the PMOI that are quoted in the media and attributed to me are completely devoid of truth.”

“I have not commented in this regard,” he added.

“Local officials in Diyala reject all forms of human rights violations and underscore the imperative of treating humanely and decently the residents of Camp Ashraf on the basis of international laws, because these residents are unarmed,” he said.

Al-Mahdawi added, “The issue of Camp Ashraf is exclusively under the purview of the federal government.”

He called on Iraqi security forces to act in accordance with international and Iraqi law when dealing with the residents of Camp Ashraf in order to avoid bloodshed, according to the statement.
