France foreign Ministry web site – December 27, 2011 – France welcomes the signing of an agreement between the Iraqi government and the UN on the transfer of residents of Camp Ashraf to a place of transit for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to proceed to review their status in a neutral and secure environment. This agreement provides that the Iraqi government must protect the residents of the camp until the end of the process.
France fully supports this agreement. It calls on all parties to facilitate its implementation in respect of human rights and international humanitarian law.
We hope it will find a peaceful and lasting solution for the residents of Camp Ashraf, which is respectful of both the sovereignty of Iraq and the rights of these people.
We fully support the efforts of the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN and UNHCR.
