Camp Ashraf: Italian support for the United Nations initiative

Italy  Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Rome 23 December 2011
Italy supports the action taken by the United Nations to find a negotiated solution to the Camp Ashraf question. The aim is to enable the Iraqi Government to exercise sovereignty over its territory while fully respecting the human rights of the Camp’s residents.

We therefore express our appreciation of the prompt and constructive mediation role played by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Martin Kobler. We hope that all parties involved will collaborate effectively to achieve a positive outcome that is able to quell the widespread humanitarian concerns. Our Representation to the United Nations has now received instructions from Minister Terzi to foster a solution.

Italy, along with Foreign Minister Terzi personally, is following the question with close interest. Our country is ready to play its part in a national capacity and also in liaison with the international community and as part of the European Union.
