Iran News: Wave of Protests Erupts Across Iran

July 23, 2024 – Multiple cities across Iran witnessed significant protests today as various groups voiced their grievances against the government and industry leaders. From environmental concerns to labor disputes, the demonstrations highlighted widespread discontent in the country.

Tehran: Protests erupted in front of the Tehran City Council as residents opposed to “park-grabbing” by city officials gathered. Reports indicated multiple instances of trees being cut down in parks for mosque construction, sparking public outrage.

Karaj and Tehran: Karaj’s central prison and Evin prison’s female ward saw prisoners join the 26th “No to Execution Tuesday” campaign, with prisoners from 16 other prisons across the country participating in hunger strikes. The campaign, started by political prisoners, demanded the abolition of the death penalty and torture in Iran.

Yasuj, Southwest Iran: Women from several villages in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad province gathered in front of the provincial governorate to protest ongoing water outages. The demonstrators demanded immediate action to resolve the water crisis affecting their communities.

Tabriz, Northwest Iran: Shaskam Telecommunications Company workers gathered to demand their unpaid wages, the implementation of job classification laws, and the payment of overdue insurance premiums. The workers voiced their frustrations over prolonged neglect of their rights and benefits.

Ardakan, Central Iran: Residents of Patkestan rallied in front of the Ardakan county governorate, protesting environmental damage caused by local mining operations. They demanded stricter regulations and measures to mitigate the adverse environmental impacts of mining activities in their region.

Pars Abad, Northwest Iran: Workers from Moghan Agro-Industrial Company gathered to protest against the mismanagement and destructive policies of the company’s CEO. The protesters called for the CEO’s removal and better oversight to protect their jobs and the company’s future.

Zanjan, Northwest Iran: Members and beneficiaries of the housing cooperative of Zanjan University of Medical Sciences held a protest in front of the provincial judiciary. They reiterated their demands regarding the 25-year-old indeterminacy of the land for the first phase of the university’s housing project, which has yet to deliver on its pledges despite years of commitments.

Ahvaz, Southwest Iran: Oil and gas sector employees will protest in front of a five-story building, chanting “Death to Owji.”

Bushehr, Southwest Iran: Workers from Fajr Jam Gas Refinery and Pars Special Economic Energy Zone will also hold demonstrations.

Ilam, Western Iran: In Ilam’s Chouar district, workers from Arghavan Gostar will protest, along with retirees from Kermanshah’s telecommunications sector and social security in front of the provincial governorate.

Kermanshah, Western Iran: Retirees from various sectors, including the social security and telecommunications industries, gathered to voice their frustrations with unfulfilled promises and insufficient pensions.

Taxis and Housing Cooperatives: Protests also included taxi drivers in Saravan, Sistan, and Baluchestan province, demanding better conditions and fulfillment of promises.

Shiraz, Central Iran: Medical students from the University of Medical Sciences protested against exploitation as cheap labor and the declining quality of clinical education.

These widespread protests indicate a growing dissatisfaction among various sectors of Iranian society, with citizens demanding accountability, better governance, and an end to systemic corruption and mismanagement.
