Maryam Rajavi welcomes EU sanctions on Iran regime calls for comprehensive sanctions

Maryam Rajavi welcomes EU sanctions on Iran regime calls for comprehensive sanctionsNCRI – Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, welcomed new complementary sanctions by the European Union against the Iranian regime.

She said that although these sanctions are crucial to prevent the regime from acquiring nuclear weapons, but, it is long way away from a comprehensive and effective sanction to include complete oil, trade, technological and political boycott of the regime.

She added: Foreign trade and oil industry in Iran are basically in the hands of the Iranian regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and a very limited section of the regime’s officials and their families. In the past three decades, hundreds of billions of dollars of oil revenue have been used just to keep the regime in power. It has been spent on security and suppressive forces, export of terrorism and fundamentalism, nuclear projects, or deposited in the accounts of the regime’s officials. This money has not been used for the development and progress of the country or public services and people’s comfort.

Mrs. Rajavi said: The policy of appeasement has been a very effective factor in helping the terrorist mullahs to get closer to obtaining atomic bomb. After the disclosure of the Iranian regime's main nuclear projects by the Iranian Resistance in 2002, instead of having comprehensive sanctions put in place, negotiations with the regime and offers of incentive packages began. Today also the statements by some EU officials regarding their willingness to resume talks with the regime, send very wrong signals to the mullahs as they view them as signs of weakness by the international community and their lack of seriousness regarding sanctions thus encouraging them further to continue their nuclear project.

Obtaining nuclear weapons, she reiterated, is part of the clerical regime's strategy for its survival. In particular, as the regime faces widespread hatred by Iranian people and internal rift and crisis, it will not give up its drive to acquire nuclear weapons. The ultimate solution to the nightmare of the Islamic fundamentalists and terrorists armed with nuclear weapons is democratic change by Iranian people and the Resistance.

She added that the regime change is not only the desire of the Iranian people, but also necessary for peace and tranquility in the region and the whole world. Therefore, an appropriate policy must include comprehensive sanctions against the regime, recognition of the Iranian people’s resistance for democracy and peace and removal of all obstacles on its way. The kind of obstacles that have been placed at the behest of the Iranian regime within the context of policy of appeasement which has prolonged the life of this regime and sufferings of the Iranian people.
