Iran: Installation of 60,000 new centrifuges, a step further to acquire atomic weapon

NCRI – The following is a statement issued by the Secretariat of the National Council of Resistance of Iran on November 15, 2006:

Yesterday, the president of the mullahs’ regime Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in his fourth press briefing since coming to power said, “Iran’s long-term target should be to install 60,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium”, adding, “The celebration of Iran going fully nuclear will take place in the year ahead. We must complete the installation of 60,000 centrifuges.”

Separately, the IAEA announced in its latest report that it had discovered weapons-grade plutonium the existence of which had not previously been reported to the agency by the mullahs’ regime.

The new claim by the regime’s president coming right after the IAEA report is a challenge to the international community. By taking advantage of international developments and investing in hesitancy by certain members of the UN Security Council, the regime is trying to buy enough time to obtain a nuclear weapon.

Any delay in imposing sanctions on this rogue regime would send a wrong signal to the ruling clerics that the international community lacks the resolve to deal with it.

The only way to stop the regime’s nuclear projects is to adopt a firm policy against it, which includes the imposition of comprehensive diplomatic, arms, technologic and oil sanctions.
