Rafsanjani’s candidacy and unprecedented infighting within the regime

NCRI – On May 15, Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iranian regime, implicitly but unmistakably called Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, a former president of the regime, the enemy’s candidate and said, “Enemy… is looking for someone to render Iran dependent, feeble and retarded in various arenas and align Iran with foreigners’ policies”.

Emphasizing on the importance of Guardians Council which vets the candidates, he called on this council to introduce those who are “pious” and the people should vote for the one who is “more pious”.

Khamenei who, given regime’s feebleness and crises is apprehensive of the consequences of elimination of candidates, attempted to boost the morale of Guardians Council members affiliated with him saying, “Even if a decision based on Sharia reasoning turns out to be wrong, since one has acted on duty, one would still be proud”.

Khamenei who is already planning for fraudulent astronomical vote count, said, “Enthusiastic and active presence in the elections gives country immunity and reigns in foreigners’ greed to transgress and cause malice”.

He called “depicting country’s conditions as critical… inducing despair in resolving problems, and portraying nation’s future as bleak” enemies’ tactics in “downturn” of regime’s elections (Regime’s News Network TV – May 15).

In the meantime, member of Guardians Council Mullah Mohammad Yazdi who is also member of Presidential Board of the Assembly of Experts alluded to the infighting within the regime and said: “Today, the leader is alone and his close friends are openly fighting him.”

He called on Ahamd Jannati, President of the Guardians Council, to courageously announce non-competence of some of the candidates! Speaking on the low morale of the most senior of regime’s officials, Yazdi added: “Some officials at the highest levels are showing lassitude and in explaining themselves say… one feels no incentive to work… right now in the Guardians Council we are facing a great disaster and are trapped between Godly and worldly decisions”.

At the same time, Fars news agency reported that one-hundred parliamentarians, in their letter to the Guardians Council, called for revocation of Rafsanjani’s competence. This letter which was handed over to Mullah Yazdi, a jurisprudent member of Guardians Council, has been described as “positions of Hashemi Rafsanjani against Velayat-e faqih”.

This letter reads, “Role of some who have enrolled and their children in management of the sedition and bolstering and coordinating leaders of sedition is not hidden to anyone”.
Alluding to some of the stances of Rafsanjani, the letter stresses: “A great responsibility such as presidency which is the trust of God and fruit of blood of thousands of martyrs cannot be given to him, especially considering the colossal executive problems and the old age of the aforementioned; there is fear that things will get out of his hands and get into the hands of officials who never believed in the revolution… it is expected of Guardians Council to block the path of those who have deviated as it has done in the past”.
