Protests continue in cities across Iran

NCRI – Gold merchants have gone on strike in anger at tax increases in the cities of Isfahan, Najaf Abad, Tabriz and Urumiyeh, in the latest of a series of protests in cities across Iran.

The new wave of demonstrations has been triggered by rising unemployment, poverty, high prices and the economic policies of the regime.

The gold merchants strike, which has seen sellers closing their jewellery shops in Imam Ali Square, Honar Bazaar, Imam square and other part of the Isfahan, believe that the VAT increase will reduce gold sales and could make gold lose its function as an capital asset.

Petrochemical workers in city of Mahabad are continuing their strike that began on May 14 in protest at poor working conditions and non-payment of wages.

A group of bus drivers gathered outside the governate office in the city of Urumiyeh on May 21 to protest an increase in fuel prices and inappropriate bus rental regulations.

Residents in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province protested outside the office of the state environment organization in city of Shahr-e-Kord on May 21 to protest at the construction of a water transfer tunnel which they believe causes water to dry up in wells in Ardal and Kohrang townships, and could risk the jobs of up to 40,000 people.

Contract employees at the Industry, Mining and Trade Organization in Tehran gathered outside the regime parliament on May 20 to protest at the failure to renew their contracts, and to demand clarification on their employment status.

Protesting teachers in city of Nahavand have demanded a refund of money deducted from their monthly wages on the pretext of an insurance payment.

Residents in the city of Marivan, in Kurdistan Province, protested on May 19 at the passage of large tanker trucks through their city. They prevented the trucks from passing through the streets amid clashes with State Security Forces who were unable to break up the demonstration.
