Nationwide uprising in Iran – Statement 64

NCRI – Students at Tehran’s Science and Technology University on Sunday held a memorial for Kianoush Asa, a post-graduate chemical engineering student.

Asa, a native of Kermanshah (western Iran), was arrested by suppressive forces on June 15. His relatives’ requests to the regime’s various bodies about his state were left unanswered until finally on June 24 they discovered his body, with signs of serious torture, in a Tehran morgue marked as an unidentified deceased person.

Despite repeated demand, the regime continues to refuse to hand over Mr. Asa’s body to his relatives.

The memorial began at 12 noon with a march from the Faculty of Chemistry to the university mosque. The students chanted: “We carry [Imam] Hossein’s message; we are proud to become martyrs”, “Students may die but will not accept disgrace”, “Today is a day of mourning; Iranian students mourn today”, “Oh martyred brother, I will take back your rights”, “ Death to the dictator”, and “You have killed the country’s youths by the thousands”.

Students lit candles and placed flowers next to the mosque at the end of the service.

The service took place despite warnings by agents of the Intelligence Ministry’s liaison office at the university not to participate.
