Iran: Second Day of Teachers’ Nationwide Strike and Protests

“Prison Is Not a Place for Teachers,” “The Imprisoned Teacher Must Be Freed,” “Strike, Rally, and Having Unions Are Our Inalienable Rights.”

On Sunday, December 12, 2021, for the second day running, teachers and educators in more than 70 cities across Iran went on strike protesting dire living conditions and low salaries. They demanded the release of imprisoned activist teachers and educators and reiterated that they would continue their strikes on Monday, December 13.

Teachers’ strikes and gatherings took place in cities including Tehran, Eslamshahr, Zibashahr, Yazd, Mehriz Yazd, Karaj, Hashtgerd, Kermanshah, Ravansar, Eslamabad-e-Gharb, Qorveh, Bijar, Sanandaj, Baneh, Saqez, Bukan, Bijar, Marivan, Sarvabad, Ziviyeh Saqez, Divanderreh, Qazvin, Ardabil, Kelachay, Hamedan, Laljin, Darjazin, Shahrekord, Farokhshahr, Qeshm, Alborz, Qazvin, Buin Zahra, Urmia, Miandoab, Takab, Babol, Amol, Gerash Mazandaran, Mashhad, Tabriz, Jolfa, Zanjan, Isfahan, Homayoonshahr, Fooladshahr, Zarrin Shahr, Falavarjan, Semirom, Borujerd, Kuhdasht, Aleshtar, Shiraz, Fasa, Mallard, Safadasht, Eqlid, Farashband, Nourabad Mamasani, Firozabad, Zarrin Dasht, Jahrom, Babak, Ramhormoz, and Shadegan.

In addition to the nationwide strike in Qom and Fasa, teachers staged a protest rally.

During the sit-in, teachers held placards that read: “Free education is the right of all students,” “Prison is not a place for teachers,” “The imprisoned teacher must be freed,” “Strike, rally, unions are, our inalienable rights,” “Justice lies in the implementation of the ranking Act,” “Ranking is our inalienable right,” “teachers are vigilant, and despise discrimination,” and “Teachers object to discrimination, injustice, and poverty.”
