Iran Protest-No. 97

On Monday, October 31, while the nationwide uprising is in its second month, former IRGC commander Mohammad Dehghan, Ebrahim Raisi’s deputy in legal affairs and a member of the Guardian Council, expressed his fear of the continuation of the uprising and the growing popular support of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). He urged the security and “State Security Force” to prevent the “enemy and MEK from recruiting youths in recent events of the country.”

In the “Coordination Council for Legal Affairs of Executive Bodies” meeting, he said, “discontent may exist in any period, but what has been going on in the last one or two months is beyond protest.” He added that the same MEK of the 1980s “is recruiting the youths of the country, and unfortunately, we see that some people inside the country are supporting them.”

Dehghan added, “At the beginning of the (1979) Revolution, those recruited by the MEK were fascinated by the excitement of the events… they were not bad people in the beginning and sought to serve the people, but the MEK recruited them. That is why we should stress that we must be vigilant and cautious… We must make sure that no one becomes a soldier of the MEK… we must be careful that the enemy does not recruit supporters of the regime and the Revolution in these circumstances.”

Mohammad Dehghan has served the clerical regime from the head start of this regime. First, he was an IRGC commander; in the 1990s, he was the head of the University Basij Organization of Tehran Province and the deputy of the University Basij Organization. During the 2017 sham presidential election, he was the head of Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf’s presidential campaign office. He has been a member of the Guardian Council since 2019.
