Rights abuses in Iran condemned by UN General Assembly

Rights abuses in Iran condemned by UN General AssemblyDespite extensive campaign by mullahs’ regime, the UN General Assembly adopted a strongly-worded resolution censuring widespread rights abuses in Iran

Maryam Rajavi called for referral of the regime’s human rights dossier to the Security Council and prosecution of the regime’s leaders in an international tribunal

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a strongly-worded resolution this afternoon, condemning flagrant violations of human rights in Iran including arbitrary executions, torture and inhuman punishments. This is the 53rd resolution adopted by various UN bodies censuring human rights abuses by the mullahs’ regime.

The resolution was sponsored by dozens of UN member states including Canada, the United States and European Union members. The document had already been adopted by the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee earlier in November.

Since the beginning of the current session of the General Assembly, the regime tried to prevent tabling of a resolution against its rights abuses at the Third Committee and the General Assembly with the help of other states notorious for their human rights violations. On several occasions, the regime tried to prevent a vote on the resolution by presenting an emergency resolution but failed every time.

In a ridiculous attempt to force Canada to withdraw its resolution on Iran, the regime presented a draft against human rights violations in Canada prior to the adoption of the resolution in the Third Committee. Canada, however, ignored that scheme. When the mullahs’ resolution was put to a vote in the Third Committee, all member states, except the Iranian regime and two other violators of human rights, voted against it, thereby defeating Tehran’s preposterous ploy.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, congratulated the Iranian people and all defenders of human rights throughout the world and noted that the resolution displayed the international community’s abhorrence towards the religious fascism ruling Iran. She emphasized the need to refer the Iranian regime’s human rights dossier to the UN Security Council and the prosecution of its leaders by an international tribunal.

Mrs. Rajavi reiterated that in addition to human rights abuses and execution of 120,000 political prisoners, courts in Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Argentina have confirmed the undeniable role of the regime’s leaders such as Ali Khamenei, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in terrorist crimes. This, Mrs. Rajavi said, required more than ever the involvement of the Security Council and the referral of Tehran’s dossier to an international tribunal. The regime’s abysmal human rights record is undoubtedly a clear manifestation of crimes against humanity, she added.

The resolution adopted by the General Assembly expresses deep concern over the use of torture and physical punishments including flogging, continued public executions, execution of several people simultaneously and on a wide scale, sentencing to death by stoning and especially execution of individuals under 18 when committing an offense, continuing violence and discrimination against women in law and in practice, attacking women who assembling in defense of their rights, continuing discrimination and other human rights abuses vis-à-vis religious and ethnic minorities, destruction of important religious premises and imposition of restrictions on religious ceremonies, continuing defiance of international norms on legal matters, refusing to hold legitimate and fair court hearings, refusing access to counsel for those arrested, violating human rights under the pretext of national security considerations, granting immunity to officials who have violated human rights, violation of prisoners’ rights including systematic use of prolonged solitary confinement, failing to provide medical care to prisoners and refusing family visits with prisoners.
