Rajavi calls on UNSC to set up international tribunal to try perpetrators of massacre of political prisoners in Iran

Rajavi

NCRI – In a message on the 22nd anniversary of the massacre of over 30,000 political prisoners in Iran in the summer of 1988, the President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, called for the establishment of an international tribunal to put on trial the criminals responsible for the massacre.

Mrs. Rajavi said: According to all the evidence and on the basis of opinions submitted by international jurists and stipulations of human rights organizations, this massacre was a flagrant example of both crimes against humanity as well as genocide. This is because its main objective was to eradicate a specific sociopolitical movement that harbored a particular belief, namely in a democratic and tolerant Islam.

Mrs. Rajavi called on the United Nations Security Council to set up a special tribunal to try the perpetrators of this grave crime, especially because the people who in 1988 implemented the fatwa of the regime’s former Supreme Leader and founder, Khomeini, are now holding senior political and judicial positions in the regime, continuing their murderous and criminal acts.

Mrs. Rajavi urged international authorities, various governments, jurists and human rights advocates to convince the UN Security Council to form this tribunal and also invited the Iranian people to submit their documents, testimonies and all information about this massacre to the Iranian Resistance.

Mrs. Rajavi also warned about death sentences for current political prisoners, including families of Camp Ashraf residents, especially political prisoner Jafar Kazemi, whose sentence has been confirmed by the clerical regime’s Court of Appeal. She called on the UN Secretary General, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and other relevant organs to condemn the regime’s barbaric crimes.

Mrs. Rajavi added: The international community is confronted with a crucial test today, which involves adopting a firm stance and rejecting a murderous dictatorship which is in fact a disgrace for humanity in the 21st Century. Economic and political relations with such a regime must be made contingent upon the cessation of cruel punishments and improvement of human rights in Iran.
