Khamenei defends election-rigging, supports Ahmadinejad and refuses to annul election results

He cautions defeated faction within regime and threatens popular uprising with bloody suppression

NCRI – Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, described remarks by the clerical regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in today’s Friday prayers sermon as an indication of an irreversible escalation of crisis and a ‘political earthquake’ within the regime. She said Khamenei had insisted on the ridiculous figure of 40 million votes in the sham election and strongly supported Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s presidency and blatantly rejected the request by the rival defeated faction to annul the election result. This, she said, was a blatant threat to crack down ruthlessly on the popular uprising.

Khamenei said that he would not annul the election result or accept a re-run, and he warned his rivals not to act beyond ‘legal channels’ or the Guardians Council. He said that if they wanted to continue with street demonstrations, the consequences would be very sensitive and dangerous and cautioned that “whether they wanted it or not, they would be responsible for bloodshed, violence and disorder,” because, “taking it to the streets” would pave the way for “terrorists to infiltrate” and “inflict blows” to overthrow the regime.

Khamenei gave false piety to Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani to allow for him to be dealt with separately in order not to allow the struggle for leadership within the regime to be taken over by rivalries over the presidency.

Frightened of the people’s nationwide resistance, Khamenei audaciously said: “The dispute is not between the supporters and opponents of the ruling system”.  He reiterated all four candidates “belong to the establishment”, are “part of the establishment”, and loyal to the supreme rule of the religious jurisprudent (velayat-e faqih, or Supreme Leader). It is “one hundred percent malicious” to try to portray the issue as a dispute between the regime and the people, and those who do are trying to hurt the regime.

As always, the mullahs’ Supreme Leader ignored the long-standing widespread incentives and appeasement by Western governments, and he tied them to the people’s nationwide uprising, describing them as “hungry wolves” who are awaiting a velvet revolution like the one in Georgia. Khamenei’s main focus was against the UK government which he saw as weak and inexpensive to attack.

Mrs. Rajavi said: “Khamenei’s explicit support for Ahmadinejad and stern warning to the defeated factions leave no options other than for them to depart from the velayat-e faqih regime or submit completely”.

The regime’s Supreme Leader left no doubt that he would be willing to carry out a bloody suppression of the popular protest even if it meant “risking” his life.

Mrs. Rajavi reiterated: “The Iranian nation’s only possible solution to the velayat-e faqih regime is democratic change.  The religious dictatorship and all its suppressive institutions must be done away with so that the Iranian people can hold free UN-supervised elections.”
