Iran’s Regime Seeks Death for Evin Political Prisoners; Resistance Urges Immediate Action

NCRI

Iranian regime’s criminal prosecutor has requested the death sentence for a number of political prisoners in Evin Prison

Iranian Resistance calls for immediate action to stop the execution of political prisoners and for their release

The prosecutor of the mullahs’ regime has requested the death sentence from the Revolutionary Court for a number of political prisoners, including Mehdi Hassani, Behrouz Ehsani, and Hossein Derakhshani, in Ward 6 of Evin Prison on the fabricated charges of “baghi” (rebellion) and “moharebeh” (enmity against God). Behrouz Ehsani, 69, was arrested in December 2022, Hossein Derakhshani, 51, on September 11, 2022, and Mehdi Hassani, 40, in October 2022. Mehdi has been in solitary confinement for more than seven months and has been subjected to physical and psychological torture.

Previously, Shahriar Bayat, 64, who was arrested in March 2023 during the nationwide uprising and sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison, was sentenced to “execution by hanging” on the fabricated charge of “sabb al-nabi” (insulting the prophet) by Branch 13 of the Tehran Criminal Court One, following a new case filed by the Ministry of Intelligence.

The Iranian Resistance calls on the UN High Commissioner and Human Rights Council, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, the International Fact-Finding Mission, and all human rights defenders to take urgent action to stop the execution of political prisoners and to secure their release. The Resistance once again emphasizes the need for a visit by a fact-finding mission to Iran’s prisons and to meet with prisoners, especially political prisoners.
