Iran regime prevents commemoration ceremony for late Ayatollah Taleghani

NCRI – In an unprecedented move, the clerical regime prevented the family of the late Ayatollah Mahmoud Taleghani from holding a ceremony to mark the 30th anniversary of his death, in fear that it may turn into a public protest by Tehran residents. The ceremony has been held for the past 30 years in Hosseinieh Ershad, a religious center in Tehran.

In the past few days, Khamenei’s agents in Hosseinieh Ershad and Tehran’s Governorate’s office have refused to issue permit for the commemoration ceremony.

Ayatollah Taleghani whose leading role in 1979 anti-monarchy revolution is well known to all Iranians was among the first distinguished clerics, who shortly after Khomeini came to power, challenged his monopolistic and suppressive policies.

Mullahs’ regime fears public gatherings to the extent in which it has even cancelled the annual religious ceremonies in Ramadan such as “Ihya” (night of prayers) normally held at Khomeini’s grave site and Eid al-Fitr ceremonies (festival that marks the end of holy month of Ramadan) held at Tehran’s Grand Mosala Mosque complex.
