By branding the detainees as ‘thugs and hooligans,’ the Revolutionary Guard Ahmadi, one of the SSF commanders in Tehran, said that the operation was carried out as part of the ‘Social Disciplinary Plan,’ reported Fars state-run news agency, May 19.

The Revolutionary Guard Alipour, Greater Tehran’s Intelligence and Security Police chief, had earlier stressed on ‘firm approach’ toward the detainees and said, “According to a new definition, the ‘Guidance’ patrol operations would be carried out in wider scale in the area.”

Simultaneously, the regime is building new prisons and torture centers in various cities. Ali Akbar Yasaqi, head of the regime’s Prison Organization, told Fars news agency on May 18 about the existing 130 prisons in the country and added, “There are new prisons under construction which will be different from previous ones and are much larger.”

Growing number of arrests is a desperate reaction by the ruling clerical regime in face of increasing widespread protests by various sectors of the Iranian society especially the youth in cities across the country.

The Iranian Resistance calls on all international human rights organizations to condemn escalating suppressive measures in Iran and take steps to refer the clerical regime’s human rights dossier to the United Nations Security Council for adoption of binding measures to stop crackdown. It also calls for appointment of a special Rapporteur to investigate brutal violations of human rights in Iran.
