Iran: Behnoud Shojaei’s hanging, a display of clerical regime’s barbarism

Negotiating and making concessions to mullahs ruling Iran, a green light for continuation of killings by a regime that is a disgrace for contemporary humanity

NCRI – Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, described the barbaric hanging of the 21-year-old Behnoud Shojaei, who was under 17 at the time of his arrest, on the day after the World Day Against Death Penalty, as a display of brutality and barbarism by the mullahs’ regime.

Negotiating and making concessions to this regime which is a disgrace for contemporary humanity has no justification, since it is considered as a green light for continuation of killing and bloodshed by mullahs in Iran, she reiterated.

Behnoud Shojaei was hanged in early hours of today, while since 1:00 a.m. local time hundreds of people, including mothers of martyrs of Tehran uprising and detainees, women and student activists were gathered outside Evin Prison to prevent the sentence to be carried out.

Many international human rights organizations, the European Union and number of countries as well as various Iranian groups have been repeatedly demanding a halt to Behnoud’s execution, but the ruling clerics paid no heed to their calls.

His death sentence had been condemned six times by the EU and five times by Amnesty International during a period of less than a year calling for its halt. The European Parliament, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and dozens of human rights organizations have also been calling for annulment of the death sentence.

Mrs. Rajavi noted that the reason for the clerical regime’s insistence on implementing the barbaric sentence was not for the alleged crime committed by the young man but solely to intensify the reign of fear and terror in the country especially among the youth. In recent months’ nationwide uprisings, the young people showed clearly that they wanted the clerical regime’s downfall and establishment of democracy and popular rule in Iran.
