Iran: Ahmadinejad feared to attend university’s reopening

tehran_university_iranNCRI – Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in fear of widespread student protests skipped his annual speech on the occasion of schools' reopening at Tehran University on Monday.

Despite days of preparations and public announcements, at the last minute he canceled his attendance.

"Contrary to past three years, the President will not give his speech on the occasion of school reopening day at Tehran University. Instead, his deputy, Mr. Davoodi will attend the ceremonial event," the state-run TV broadcast said.

He was exhausted from the daily business and tasked me to attend, said Davoodi without going into the real reasons behind Ahmadinejad not attending the ceremony.

Since early morning hours on Monday, members of the State Security Forces (SSF) – mullahs' suppressive police – with the help of the university security guards brought in from other universities in Tehran controlled the school campus where Ahmadinejad was expected to address the students.

The agents jammed up the main gates to the university grounds not allowing students from other Tehran's schools to enter the premises.

Students' IDs were closely examined to prevent others entering the university. In addition to tight security at the gates, the SSF agents would stop students randomly to double and triple check their identities.
