Camp Liberty – No. 14

Suppressive actions and continuous intensification of pressure has turned Camp Liberty into a prison with harsh conditions and very low standards:

1. The principle individual in charge of Camp Liberty and the representative of the Suppression Committee is an individual by the name of Sadeq Muhammad Kazem. He is the same criminal who is wanted by the Spain’s National Court for participation in the massacres of July 2009 and April 2011.

2.  Some of the other individuals involved in those two killings have also been now transferred to Liberty.

3. On Saturday, February 25, the suppressive forces prevented entry of some residents’ medications that were sent to them from Ashraf. The suppressive forces returned those medications back to Ashraf.

4.  On Sunday, February 26, a truck containing food and few electric water heaters that were purchased at the expense of the residents was not allowed to enter the camp and the residents’ repeated requests from UNAMI personnel were to no avail, and the truck was forced to go away.
Preventing arrival of food has been rare even during the three-year siege of Ashraf.

5. As a result of preventing the residents from bringing their properties with them, the residents are facing severe shortage of every-day necessities of life such as chairs, and have no choice but to take turn in using the existing chairs.

6. The number of usable washrooms is also less than what’s needed for the camp’s residents such that they have to take turn in long lines to use them.
