Second group’s settlement at Liberty makes shortage of water more critical as nearing to hot season

Camp Liberty- No. 16

Broken sewage system and leakage of black water has contaminated the camp grounds

NCRI – With the second group of Ashraf residents having moved to Camp Liberty, the shortage of water and difficulties in providing it has turned into a crisis. The only source for providing water is the pumping station 12 kilometers away from the camp which is also being used by several Iraqi garrisons and many others in addition to the camp residents. By using their own tankers as well as renting other tankers from Iraqi contractors, the residents can cover only a small part of their need hardly sufficient for the first group of 400 residents.

After the transfer of the second 400 residents, the problem has become much more serious making the life in the camp intolerable, particularly some weeks later when the hot weather will begin in Iraq. Daily protests of the camp residents to the representatives of Iraqi government and the United Nations to resolve this problem has gone nowhere so far.

The only solution to this problem is to connect the camp to the urban water system. The residents have informed the officials of the Iraqi government and UNAMI that they are ready to pay for the expense of connecting the camp to the urban water system, but they have not received any response yet.

In the meantime, on Saturday morning, March 10, one of the black water tanks was perforated causing the black water spread over the area (the photos are enclosed). The black water tanks in Camp Liberty are extremely old and corroded and are likely to get perforated or broken at any moment. This is while the representative of the Iraqi government does not allow the residents to purchase new tanks at their own expense or transfer the tanks from Ashraf to Liberty.
