Iraqi government obstructs sale of Camp Ashraf residents’ property

NCRI – The Government of Iraq has violated agreements by not allowing merchants to enter Camp Liberty and are therefore preventing Camp Liberty residents from selling their property at Camp Ashraf.

September 5 plan by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), which was prepared with the US Embassy’s agreement, specifies: “The GOI shall allow the residents to sell their property at any time.…. The GOI shall safeguard and guarantee all Camp Ashraf property.”

One day later, US Assistant Secretary of State Beth Jones gave her backing to UNAMI’s plan and wrote that if the residents accept this plan, “the United Nations will help facilitate the safeguarding of the property at Ashraf through your retention of a trusted local security firm. The U.S. Embassy will do its utmost to support these efforts.”

However on the orders of the Iraqi committee in the Iraqi Prime Ministry that is charged with suppression of the residents, Iraqi forces prevented a group of merchants who had travelled from across Iraq to enter the camp on October 23.

They insulted, threatened, and confiscated their telephones before forcing them to return. This is despite the fact that the residents had informed the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and Iraqi forces at least a day prior to their arrival.

During last two months, not only have none of the items indicated in the plan and stressed in the letter been accomplished, but the Government of Iraq systematically schemes to steal and expropriate the residents property.”
