Iraq: Iranian dissidents in Camp Liberty deprived of basic needs in Ramadan

Camp-Liberty-300

NCRI – Iraqi forces stationed in Camp Liberty, which houses thousands of members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in Iraq, Tuesday (June 23) continued refusing to allow delivery of basic necessities purchased by the residents which have been held at the camp entrance since last week.

Preventing entry of items that include ventilators and parts for repairing and maintenance of water and electricity systems has alshlready created much problem for the residents living in temporarily metal trailer units in the hot summer weather conditions.

Items being held up at the camp’s entry include: Insecticides, anti-mosquito cream, electric cables, water pipeline connections to repair the camp’s infrastructure, electric sockets and plugs, light bulbs, electric adaptors, ventilators, vehicle light bulbs, vehicle clutch, bicycle spare parts, water sprinklers, silicon glue, water hoses, batteries, compressors for air conditioner of minibuses, electric generator filters, and wrist watch batteries.

Despite repeated calls by the residents, the Iraqi officers that are taking orders from a governmental committee that functions under the supervision of Iraq’s National Security Advisor continue to refuse to release the items.

On a daily basis, the residents’ representatives have taken up the issue with the UNAMI monitors and protested this illegal act by Iraqi officers, but UNAMI has not taken effective measures.

Depriving residents of basic human needs in the month of Ramadan and in 40 degrees Celsius temperatures is an inhuman act and a clear breach of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the United Nations and Government of Iraq on 25 December 2011, as well as a violation of many international covenants and a criminal measure for which those responsible can be legally prosecuted.

The Iranian Resistance calls on the United Nations and the U.S. government that have repeatedly and in writing committed themselves to the wellbeing and security of Camp Liberty residents to take immediate measures to end this inhuman siege.
