Iran: Delay in imposing comprehensive sanctions by EU would aid mullahs

Delay in imposing comprehensive sanctions by EU would aid mullahs to acquire atom bomb, continue executions and torture, suppress uprising

NCRI – As the European Union Foreign Ministers meet on Monday, January 25, 2010, the Iranian Resistance reiterates the fact that the continued widespread political and economic ties with the Iranian regime and delay in imposing comprehensive sanctions against it – under any pretext – would only aid the regime in its bid to acquire nuclear bomb, to execute and torture more political prisoners and further suppress the nationwide uprising that is threatening the existence of the entire dictatorial regime.

The meeting takes place at a time when the regime has officially rejected a proposal to transfer its enriched uranium outside the country. Mullahs’ response to the proposal is a clear proof to the fact that any attempt to halt the regime’s nuclear programs through engaging them is futile. The policy of engagement and giving concessions has only helped the regime to develop and complete its nuclear programs and will continue to serve that end.

The policy of appeasement with the regime is maintained while the suppression of people’s uprising has taken unprecedented dimensions. During and following the uprising on the holy day of Ashura, December 27, hundreds of people were injured and thousands arrested. The detained protesters are tried as being "mohareb" (waging war against God) charged with cooperating with the PMOI, punishable by death. Ebrahim Raeesi, First Deputy of the regime’s Judiciary, said on December 30 that any connection or sympathy with the PMOI was considered as "moharebeh" or waging war on God, and the sentence for it is death.
