NCRI – In an interview with a state run news agency on Wednesday, May 3, an Iranian official criticized the Mojahedin Khalq, or People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), saying the group is trying to influence the national elections scheduled to take place on May 17.

Reza Nazari, a member of the Central Council of the Union of Islamic Society of University Students in an interview with the Revolutionary Guard-affiliated Fars news agency: “We should not be influenced by the enemy’s propaganda. The enemy is intent on delivering a blow to the regime by wavering our beliefs… The intelligence apparatus of the (country) should deal swiftly with the activities of the MEK.”

Additionally, the state-run daily Jomhuri-Islami published an article on May 4 under the headline, “Mujahedin say: Do Not Vote, Boycott Election.” It acknowledged that there were signs of popular support for this boycott campaign.

“These days (they’re) asking people to boycott the election. Using satellite TVs, these grouplets [opposition groups] are trying to disappoint the Iranian people, and by projecting a dark picture of the country’s future, they are trying to convince the people not to stay away from polling stations,” wrote Jomhuri-Islami.

These warnings indicate that the regime fears the growing popularity for the MEK’s overall mission and this specific campaign, particularly amongst the youth and university students.
