EDITORIAL: Iran Regime’s Lies and Inaction, the Main Cause of the Coronavirus Outbreak Crisis

Editorial-NCRI

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK) in a statement announced that the death toll of the Coronavirus in Iran had reached over 1000 by Monday, March 2.

Footages from Iran also show many people falling unconscious on the streets and in many other places after being infected with the COVID-19 virus. The Coronavirus outbreak in Iran has turned into an enormous problem and a humanitarian crisis due to the clerical regime’s lies and inaction.

After the regime’s lies about the number of martyrs of the November 2019 uprising and lies about the downing of the Ukrainian aircraft, this time the regime’s lies about the number of fatalities of the Coronavirus in Iran have angered the public. It also has exacerbated the internal conflict in the regime, and they are exposing each other. A member of parliament from the city of Rasht said the official statistics were a joke and he obtained real statistics from some cemeteries, and “these cemeteries cannot be hidden. In the villages, people die and are buried.”

One of the centers where the Coronavirus has become widespread due to lack of medical attention is the country’s prisons. In particular, the wards in which the November uprising arrestees are held. Some have become infected with the disease. One of them was sentenced to death just a few days ago, on charges of participating in anti-government demonstrations. There is serious concern about the status of political prisoners. The President-Elect of the National Council of The Resistance of Iran Mrs. Maryam Rajavi once again warned that “the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Iran prisons is a serious danger. She called on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Human Rights Council to immediately intervene to save the lives of prisoners and prevent a major humanitarian catastrophe in Iran.

Iran under the mullahs’ rule has become the center of the spread of the virus to other countries. In this regard the New York Times wrote on February 28: “Infections in neighboring countries and even some as far as Canada, Norway and New Zealand have been traced to Iran.” The Associated Press also reported: “All of Bahrain’s cases link back to Iran.” Time magazine also reported the urgent situation in Iran due to the spread of the Coronavirus and quoted Iranian physicians as saying:

After the news of the Coronavirus outbreak in China was reported, all countries cut off their relations with China and took all necessary precautions to prevent the outbreak of Coronavirus. While in Iran no actions were taken to cut off relation with China. Mahan Air airlines, affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), seized the opportunity to trade and profiteer at the expense of the lives and future of the Iranian people. The company was used in lieu of other airlines to transport passengers from China, and this continues even today despite the regime’s denials.

Reports indicate that the virus spread originally from several Chinese travelers residing in one of the hotels in the city of Qom in late January 2020, but the regime concealed this matter because of having its sham parliamentary elections.

The regime’s interior minister, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, admitted on February 23: “Some people recommended that we postpone the election. Regarding Qom, they insisted we postpone the election in the city. As the official responsible for the election, I did not accept any of these (recommendations).”

The confessions by the clerical regime’s interior minister clearly show that the mullahs’ regime was aware of the Coronavirus’s spread in Iran, particularly in Qom. It also had a choice of postponing the election due to the spread of the COVID-19; but because of political interests, it gambled away the lives of thousands of Iranians and sought to hold parliamentary elections by covering up the news. Therefore, it has spread the Coronavirus throughout Iran and from Iran to other parts of the world.

In this regard, the publication of any statistics on the scale of the disaster is considered strictly confidential and a security matter. The state-run Resalat daily, while quoting the Secretary of the Nursing Home, on February 29 wrote: “The statistics of patients, nurses and medical staff diagnosed with the coronavirus are completely a matter of security and are not provided anywhere, and even the heads of hospitals are unaware of them and there is only one specific channel.

The regime’s lies and inaction and people’s inaccessibility to minimum hygiene facilities such as masks and disinfectants have made people extremely angry, and what deeply frustrates the regime is the deep anger and mistrust of the people.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), underscored that the regime’s resort to a cover-up is a futile effort to counter the people and the rebellious youths and to thwart the eruption of an uprising and popular anger. In such a situation, it is necessary to emphasize the need to express outrage and stage protests and strike to any extent possible. Once again she emphasized that the Medical and healthcare facilities should be removed from the IRGC’s monopoly and provided to the physicians, hospitals, and the public. While referring to the regime’s deceit and inaction she called upon the United Nations and the international organization, emphasizing: “The United Nations, World Health Organization, and other international human rights organizations must compel the religious fascism ruling Iran to make public all the facts and figures regarding COVID-19 and provide them to relevant international organizations in order to save the lives of the people of Iran and other countries in the region.”
