Italian MEPs call on EU, UN to intervene to release Camp Ashraf hostages

Statement by Italian Members of European Parliament
Brussels, 13 September 2013
We strongly condemn the recent massacre of defenseless members of Camp Ashraf in Iraq by the Iraqi forces. In this brutal attack 52 people were killed in coldblooded many of whom were shot in the back of the head while handcuffed. They abducted seven members of the Camp including 6 women and a man. According to the news, these hostages were taken to a place near Bagdad airport and last night transferred by helicopters of the office of Iraqi Prime Minister to Al Amara, southern Iraq to be extradited to Iran. They can be extradited to Iran any time which means imminent torture and execution.

We strongly call upon Italian government as well as other European countries, UN Secretary General, and the UN High Commission for Refugees who bear direct responsibility for the safety and security of the hostages to intervene to take all necessary actions to secure the release of these hostages to prevent the handing them over to the clerical regime in Iran. These hostages are all protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention.

The UN must also send its monitors to camp Liberty to prevent more attacks.

We express our solidarity with many Iranians across the world who are on hunger strike.
