Factional feuds overshadow chairman selection for mullahs’ “Assembly of Experts”

NCRI – In the midst of intense factional feuding within the regime, some factions are apparently sabotaging attempts by a regime insider, Ahmad-Reza Mahdavi Kani, to become the chairman of the regime’s Assembly of Experts, the state-run Fars news agency reported on Friday.

Fars news agency, which is affiliated with the regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), wrote, “Speculations that Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani will become the Assembly of Experts chairman have intensified and opponents have extensive designs to discredit Mahdavi Kani and force him to refrain from running for the position.”

It added, “In their most recent moves, people close to [former mullahs’ President Ali Akbar] Hashemi Rafsanjani have assembled a political team for the media in order to dash the hopes of Mahdavi Kani getting the post.”

According to Fars, more than 50 members of the mullahs’ Assembly of Experts are in favour of Mahdavi Kani to become chair.

Attempts to remove Rafsanjani and install Mahdavi Kani as the Assembly of Experts chair, which is scheduled to take place next month, signals growing fissions and feuds at the apex of the regime’s political structure.
