Maryam Rajavi: Council of Europe resolution, decisive judgment by international community on Ashraf residents’ rights

NCRI – The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), in a resolution signed by majority of its members, underlined Ashraf residents’ status as ‘protected persons’ under the Fourth Geneva Convention. This resolution further emphasized that the UN and the US government must guarantee the protection of Ashraf, calling on Council member states to persuade the Iraqi government to immediately dissolve the Committee to Close Down Camp Ashraf and put an end to the psychological torture of Ashraf residents by Iranian intelligence agents through 180 loudspeakers and the case of Ashraf to be referred to Iraqi Parliament for supervision.

The Iranian Resistance’s President-elect Mrs. Maryam Rajavi described this resolution – representing the views of over one billion people from 47 European nations – as a firm judgment by the international community regarding the rights of Ashraf residents, hoping the governments of the member states, the US Administration and UN will take the necessary measures to fulfill the articles of this resolution and not allow the Iranian regime and its Iraqi proxies to further suppress Ashraf residents and deceitfully violate their most fundamental human rights.

In an international conference held in Brussels on January 25, a number of the most prominent European Parliament members and senior officials from Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations including Obama’s National Security Advisor until November 2010, General James Jones; Bill Richardson, US Energy Secretary and Ambassador to the UN during the Clinton years; Michael Mukasey, US Attorney General during the Bush Administration; John Bolton, US Deputy Secretary of State and Ambassador to the UN during the Bush years; and also Irene Khan, former Amnesty International Secretary General, called for the guarantee of Ashraf residents’ protection, an end to the psychological torture of the residents and the disbanding of the Committee to Close Down Camp Ashraf.
