NCRI – The former commander of the Iranian regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and current senior military advisor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei acknowledged that the IRGC targeted the bases of the main Iranian opposition in Iraq in 2001.
Gen. Rahim Safavi said that in the spring of 2001, during a four-hour-long missile barrage, the IRGC fired more than 1,000 long and medium range missiles and artillery shells against the bases of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) on the Iraqi side of the border.
The state-run Fars news agency, affiliated with the IRGC, quoted Rahim Safavi on Thursday as saying: "The IRGC carried out an operation from 4:00 to 8:00 am, firing more than 1,000 long and medium range missiles and artillery shells against all of the PMOI’s bases, including Camp Ashraf and the camp in the Iraqi town of al-Emarra, which destroyed the bases and inflicted heavy casualties.
The attack took place on April 18, 2001.
