ISJ calls for UN investigation into Baghdad bombings

Futile efforts to take hostage election results, to prevent formation of a democratic and non-sectarian government in Iraq

The terrorist bombings in recent days and weeks across Iraq, especially in Baghdad, are aimed at retaliating against the people of Iraq for supporting the secular, democratic and nationalist forces in the parliamentary elections last March and their decisive rejection of the Iranian regime, its agents and proxies in Iraq.

Experts and observers on Iraq and Middle East widely believe that these bombings, which have caused thousands of deaths and injuries, would not have been possible without “logistical support from within Iraqi security organs and their commanders” that are supposedly under full control of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. The bombings are taking place despite the heavy presence of security forces in Baghdad who have been put on full alert.

Two weeks ago, cognizant of defeat in the elections and realizing that widespread fraud had failed to overshadow the Iraqi people’s rejection of the Iranian regime and its affiliated forces, Prime Minister al-Maliki threatened that “violence will probably return to Iraq.”

The disturbing and tragic scenes in Baghdad these days, which have shocked the world community, make it appear as though those threats have become a reality. This is a criminal blackmail aimed at ignoring people’s vote and attempting to secure key government posts.

International Committee In Search of Justice (ISJ) calls on the U.S. embassy and the American forces in Iraq as well as the United Nations office in that country to launch a bold and an impartial investigation into the source of these bombings and not allow the results of the parliamentary elections and Iraqi people's votes be stolen under the threat of further violence and carnage.
