Larestan, Iran anti-regime protestNCRI – On Thursday, February 4, 2010, the arisen people in the city of Lar (southern Iran) continued their protests for a fourth straight day despite suppressive measures implemented by the clerical regime as well as an undeclared martial law.

According to the Social Headquarters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) inside the country, the entire city is on strike, with shops, government institutions, and schools closed. Protestors chant “We are all together,” “Incompetent officials, resign! resign!” and “Death to collaborators.” The situation in the city is tense.

The protests started on Monday in objection to fraudulent acts committed by regime officials under the pretext of converting one of the city’s sections called Gerash into a county. Angry demonstrators attacked Lar’s police station, government buildings, and Melli and Mellat banks, shattering windows and clashing with State Security Forces (SSF). The regime’s agents fired on protestors and hurled tear gas into the crowds. A number of them were beaten by the people. Many protestors were also injured during the clashes and were transferred to Imam Reza Hospital, the town’s only hospital.

Fearing the spread of protests, the regime’s intelligence agents resorted to widespread arrests. At least 20 were arrested, 16 of whom were taken to the nearby city of Shiraz.

A number of senior regime officials, including the Interior Minister and the Chairman of the mullahs’ National Security Committee, visited Lar to help resumption of order in the city. At least 1,000 of the regime’s Special Guards, equipped with electric batons, tear gas, and water dispensing vehicles were sent to the city of Lar, which is located in the southern province of Fars.
