Iraqi MP: Displacement of Camp Ashraf residents a reward for Iranian regime

Dr. Dhafir al-Aani, member of the Iraqi parliamentNCRI – In an interview with al-Jazeera TV on Thursday, Dr. Dhafir al-Aani, a member of the Iraqi parliament described Government’s plan to displace exiled Iranian opposition members from Camp Ashraf to remote areas in southern Iraq as a “reward” to the Iranian regime.

He said: “At a time when Iraqi Government and those political parties in power should be thinking of treating the wounded Iraqis and prosecute the terrorist elements, the only solution that Iraqi government has offered and insisted upon has been the expulsion of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) from Diyala province to Baghdad.  It appears that [the Iraqi Government] wants to reward Tehran, which all know how much is meddling in the security related matter of our country.”

The Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, in remarks that was first published in his website announced plans for the "transfer of Camp Ashraf residents to Nuqrat al-Salman" south of Iraq as a "step towards expelling them (from Iraq)."

The Iranian Resistance denounced remarks by Iraqi Prime Minister as unlawful and disgraceful kowtowing to orders of the religious fascism ruling Iran in the midst of nationwide uprising in Iran.

The Iranian regime has set the suppression of Ashraf residents in Iraq as a precondition to its support for al-Maliki in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iraq.

The U.S. Committee for Camp Ashraf Residents (USCCAR) strongly condemned “the unlawful decision which blatantly violates international humanitarian law and runs counter to the Iraqi Government's written assurances to the United States about upholding the human rights of Ashraf residents.”

In a Congressional hearing on October 28, Ambassador Feltman, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, warned that "We're concerned about Iraqi desire to move Camp Ashraf to someplace else inside Iraq… they would try to forcibly move them to a different location in Iraq, and that could lead to bloodshed."

In a letter to al-Maliki, European Parliament vice president Alejo Vidal-Quadras warned "any forcible displacement" from Camp Ashraf "would no doubt lead to far greater casualties" than the raid in late July by Iraqi forces on Ashraf.

In Spain, a court accepted to investigate the July attack on Ashraf as a crime against humanity that left 11 residents killed and hundreds wounded. The judge reiterated that the residents of Ashraf are Protected Persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
