August 15, 2009 – Dr. Adnan al-Dulaimi, Chairman General Council for the People of Iraq, condemned the attack against the defenseless refugees of Camp Ashraf and described it as inhumane. He called on the governments of Iraq and the United States to examine and review this matter as soon as possible.

In a statement issued in this regard, he said: We hear distressing news from Ashraf which is shameful for us. We did not expect the killings, massacres, and arrests in Iraq to encompass Ashraf City as well. It was unimaginable for us to see political refugees and the Iraqi people’s guests to be attacked by Humvee armored vehicles, loaders, and bullets fired by the armed forces of the host country!

He added that: We at the Iraqi Congress invite the governments of Iraq and the US, both of which had committed to treating humanely members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), to deal with PMOI members in accordance with international obligations, treaties and the Geneva Conventions.

Dulaimi demanded the return of all detainees to Camp Ashraf as soon as possible since they are injured and have launched a hunger strike which has put them in very difficult physical condition. He also demanded the lifting of all restrictions and the siege on Ashraf as well as the launch of an international investigation to examine the crimes committed in the course of these attacks.

He said that clearly the protection of the defenseless Camp Ashraf residents is among the duties of international organizations.
